David Pickup read Theology at Durham University. He then qualified as a social worker and spent two years in Sheffield as a probation officer. A contrasting life-style running a small-holding in Kent encouraged a return to music and the acquisition of the teaching diploma in piano from the Royal College of Music
Several years teaching experience in local schools brought him to this music department, initially as a piano tutor. This role has expanded to include the co-ordination of instrumental and vocal teaching, the development of the Perfomance Studies course, and much accompaniment work.
Involvement in programmes of staff development for part-time teachers led to a research project with Kim Burwell, in this department and Vanessa Young, a colleague in the Faculty of Education. We are researching a relatively unexplored area - the nature of teaching styles in instrumental and vocal tuition; specifically the use of strategies and areas of study in individual and group lessons.
