Moving image

Combining established and new technologies, the Department offers a range of specialist moving image facilities. Film resources include professional cameras, sound recorders, a fully equipped studio, and portable lighting kits for location work. Video equipment includes professional digital cameras, tracks, dollies, jibs, lighting gear, networked editing suites, sound dubbing suites, and a range of industry standard software. For television production, the Department houses a large television studio equipped with professional widescreen cameras, controlled from a gallery with digital desk and sound mixing room. Our animation resources combine professional equipment for traditional forms of animation (such as drawn or model) with industry standard software and dedicated suites for newer forms of 2D and 3D computer animation.

Sound studios

For sound recording and mixing there are a number of professional studios designed for us by the BBC. Portable recorders and microphones are used for field recording, with sound edited in dedicated suites using industry standard software.

Digital creativity

For digital media and design work, the Department offers dedicated suites (with their own powerful servers) housing top-of-the-range computers running the latest versions of industry standard software for web design, graphic design, and so on.

Technical support

As well as lecturer support, a team of dedicated technical staff with specialist expertise in the equipment we use are on-hand to assist student work.
