Welcome from the Dean of Arts and Humanities

Prof Roderick Watkins
Welcome to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, home to a diverse range of high-quality programmes and Departments across the spectrum of contemporary and traditional areas of study in Arts and Humanities.
What holds us together is our belief in the value and importance of our disciplines, our belief in the power of an arts and humanities education to transform the lives of our students, and our ambition for ourselves, our students and our University more generally to make a powerful contribution to the academic, cultural, social and economic well-being of the communities we serve.
Learning and Teaching
We have outstanding, committed and passionate teaching staff, whose expertise and experience allow them to act as powerful advocates for their subjects. The wide range of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes allows potential students to identify subjects and pathways closely aligned to their needs and aspirations, combining academic rigour with contemporary, practical skills of great value in terms of employability.
Research
Home to four Departments whose research activity includes work rated as "internationally excellent" in RAE 2008 (Music, History & American Studies, Theology & Religious Studies, English & Language Studies), this Faculty places great emphasis upon the development and support of high-quality research, including practice-based research, which greatly enriches the learning experience of each of our students.
Arts and Culture
As home to the University's work in Music, Dance, Drama, Film, Animation, Art and Design, staff and students of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities make an enormous contribution to the artistic and cultural life of the University, the region and beyond. We benefit from a number of outstanding facilities, including Augustine House, the Sidney Cooper Gallery|, and the St Gregory's Centre for Music|, and have developed an extensive range of partnerships, including partnerships with the Canterbury Festival| and the Sounds New Festival|.
I hope to have the pleasure of meeting you personally and welcoming you to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
