Tutor: Martin Crowther | Canterbury campus | £42
In 1620 Canterbury grocer Robert Cushman hired the Mayflower and with other Puritan families, embarked on a perilous voyage to start a new life in America.
Discover what life was like in early 17th century Canterbury, including the religious persecution that led several local families to risk all in such a dramatic departure.
Learn about the conditions on board ship and how the Pilgrim Fathers fared when they finally got to the other side of the Atlantic, including the early years of Plimoth Plantation. Using a range of primary sources and eyewitness accounts together with replica artefacts, this workshop is suitable for all.
As a former curator with both the National Maritime Museum and Canterbury Museums, and having completed his own transatlantic sailing ship voyage, workshop leader Martin Crowther has a long held fascination with the Pilgrim Fathers, the Mayflower, and their Canterbury connections.
