Friendship warms our loneliness. Music has the same possibilities in
that it draws like-minded people together. Mozart’s clarinet concerto, Greig’s piano concerto, and Haydn’s great oratorio The Creation all owe their initial inspiration to the persuasion of particular friends. Then there is Elgar’s great work The Enigma Variations from a theme his wife encouraged him to develop, and finally write variations on it, each dedicated to a special friend.
The day will be spent exploring the four treasures in some detail.
