Chaplaincy

At the heart of any Christian community is worship, and “The Chapel of Christ in Majesty” is no exception. Services are held daily in the university with our main celebration being on a Thursday night.

  • Monday: 8.30: Eucharist - join us as we celebrate one of the saints
  • Tues – Fri: 8.30: Morning Prayer
  • Wed 3.30: Cafe Church Augustine House Terrace Coffee Pod
  • Thurs 6.00pm evening service followed by supper

Termly retreats are also available as well as an annual pilgrimage, this year we plan to visit the Holy lands!

Worship at Christ Church is shaped by both the tradition and the community so if you feel that you would like to get involved and have your say there are several possible ways of doing this:

  1. Students are regularly invited to participate in the organisation of key services in the Christian calendar, this is an opportunity to contribute directly to the very fabric and flavour of the university (Contact Rev Dave)

  2. Become a “Welcomer” and be part of the meet and greet team, ensuring that those who come to chapel receive the quality of welcome that reflects our Christian values
  3. The Welcome Team have a key role in Chapel. Their jobs involve:

    • Greeting new people
    • Guiding people to Supper after services
    • Encouraging people
    • Assisting the clergy
    • Helping people find there way in an Anglican service
    • In short being a friendly, familiar, approachable face that people can talk to

  4. Sign up as a intercessor (that is the person who leads the prayers) or as a reader (someone who reads the lessons during a service) (Contact Sam Walker)
  5.

  6. Join the Chapel choir, and sing regularly in chapel and the cathedral (Contact Steve Barker)
  7. Chapel Choir

Chapel choirOur own student-led choir sings different styles and draws upon the whole range of the choral tradition.

The choir sings in Chapel services and at a variety of events, such as Canterbury Cathedral, carol services and choir festivals - with an active social life as well!

Music plays an important part in our worship and the Chapel benefits from having both a choir and a worship band. We welcome new members and if you would like to contribute your singing or instrumental skills, please contact Stephen Barker (Choir master) chapel.choir@canterbury.ac.uk

  8. Join the worship group and play and lead worship in a whole manner of new and varied ways (contact Rev Jeremy Law)

  9. Become a member of our technical team and help produce, set up and run the PowerPoint’s and other technical pieces of equipment from the newly installed audio visual system (Contact Rev Jeremy)
  10. Where do you talents lie? Helping out with the new sound and visual system is one way you can contribute to Chapel worship.

Recently, we have invested thousands of pounds into the new Chapel sound & visual system. Being part of the team involves setting up before chapel services, helping with sound check and packing down at the end of the night and if you are extremely talented and are able to help manage and create PowerPoint documents then we may well have a ministry just for you. For more info or to get involved, contact the Rev Jeremy

  11. Become a sacristan and follow in the footsteps of generations of students who have served the chapel and the clergy as they have studied here. (Contact Rev Dave for more details)

  12.

  13. Become a retreat organiser and plan and deliver a one day retreat for your peers.
  14. Our one day retreats happen on a termly basis and draw on the gifts and talents of our local community, in the last twelve months we have visited several of the local churches and focuses on silence, art and the concept of being called, if you feel this is something you would like to get involved in, then let us know.

  15. And most importantly become a regular member of our worshipping community and lead by example.
  16. The university chapel sits at the very heart of the university and stands as a constant reminder to all who enter this University just where its foundations lay. Prayer is said daily here in the university and the chapel bell rings out reminding all who study here that a service is about to start and that this University was built on prayer. By supporting the chapel you continue that tradition and access an experience of university unique to Canterbury Christ Church.
