Certificate of Education
Teacher Training College
The first qualification offered by the College was the Certificate of Education (Cert Ed), a three-year programme which did not require A levels for entry. In due course, the Bachelor of Education (BEd) award was added which allowed students who did well to complete an extra year for a degree. PGCE was added to the portfolio in the 1970s, and this remains a very popular qualification at both Primary and Secondary level today.
Michael Berry became Principal in 1975 on the retirement of Dr Mason. During the following 10 years, the 168 teacher training colleges around the country were cut to 20 but Christ Church College flourished and became the only general teacher training college in Kent.
In 1975, a new four year BEd award was added. Some students trained to teach at primary school level while others who trained for junior/secondary school level could combine the BEd with other subjects such as Art, English, Geography, Maths, Music, RS, Science and Movement Studies.
