The Queen's Visit 1965

In recognition of the celebrations surrounding the Queen’s official 90th birthday, the University is delighted to make available archive footage of Her Majesty’s visit to Canterbury Christ Church College in 1965.

As Christ Church was one of only two Church of England colleges to open in the 20th century, an invitation to visit us was extended to the Queen, as Head of the Church.

Her Majesty came to the College on Maundy Thursday 15 April 1965, visiting the Cathedral to distribute Maundy money, before a tour of the College Campus led by the then Principal, Frederic Mason. This video provides fascinating views of the Canterbury Campus as it was in 1965, very different from what we see today, but still with some distinct and recognisable campus landmarks.
