Academic Learning Development

Academic Learning Development]

Our aim is to provide academic guidance to all students at the University, whatever their level of study. Whilst we work closely with academic departments, the support is offered on a confidential, non-judgmental basis.

Who we support

We provide free of charge academic support for all students following programmes at the University. You don’t have to be failing your course or struggling with your studies to benefit from our guidance. In addition, we work in collaboration with academic departments to develop tailored workshops in order to enhance students’ academic skills. In some cases a tutor may suggest you contact us if they feel you would benefit from some further academic support.

What we do

At Academic Learning Development we will try and help you help yourself. We offer a supportive atmosphere in which students can meet with our staff and take positive steps to address their learning needs.

What we don’t do

We don’t help you with the content of your assignment nor do we proofread your submissions. We can help you to produce better essays by working on your understanding of the academic writing process.

What we offer

Online resources: advice and exercises for developing your IT and academic skills. You can find the Academic Learning Development link by clicking the Student Support tab on Blackboard.

Individual and small group consultations:  these sessions are usually one hour long and take place at a mutually suitable venue such as the dedicated Academic Learning Development space in Augustine House, Canterbury or a small study room at the campuses in Broadstairs and Medway. The sessions are typically on academic and IT topics such as referencing and avoiding plagiarism, PebblePad, critical analysis, essay structure, presentation skills, exam techniques, Microsoft Office etc.

Workshops: we offer generic workshops at the Canterbury Campus. For workshop details, please see our Academic Learning Development Blackboard pages. We also offer departmental and bespoke workshops at all campuses. Please contact us for further details on these.
