European Computer Driving Licence

The IT Department is currently re-assessing the most effective way of delivering ECDL training and testing for staff and students. Therefore all training is on hold until further notice.

We apologise for the break in service during this period.


Funding and Fees

If you are a member of staff at the Institution, you can apply for funding for ECDL via the Staff Development Office. You will need to download and complete the application form accessible on this page then follow the procedure outlined via the link below.

Please note- we will need to ask you for the following information in order to register you as a learner with the BCS for either the ECDL or Advanced ECDL qualification:

  • Title
  • House Name/Number 
  • Post Code 
  • Date of Birth


Procedure for Staff wishing to register for ECDL

Funding for staff

In conjunction with the Staff Development Office and Computing Services, The University is committed to encouraging as many staff as possible to gain the ECDL qualification.

 IMPORTANT NOTICE-From 1st November 2011:-

Staff who express a desire to complete the ECDL will be advised that:

 1) They have 2 years to complete all modules.

 2) If they successfully complete all modules there will be no charge but if all modules are not completed a charge of £100 will be raised to cover the full cost of the ECDL.

 3) Staff already registered and who have paid £25 will still need to complete the ECDL within the agreed 3 years. On successful completion of the ECDL the staff member will be refunded with £25.00. In order to obtain a refund you will need to send a photocopy of your certificate, plus a completed expenses form to Danny Ball in Staff Development.


Step 1:

Obtain and complete the form 'Funding Application for ECDL' '

Step 2:

Complete the form, get it signed by your Head of Department and return it to our Training Administrator who will process your application. She will then return a copy of the form to you in the internal post.

 NOTE: The funding covers the costs of 7 tests. Once this allocation has been exceeded re-sit tests will need to be paid for by the staff member, this is currently £10 per test. The £10 exam fee also includes one assessment paper.


Procedure for Students wishing to register for ECDL

Costs for students*
The current fee for students wishing to obtain the full ECDL is £100 and should be paid usng the online shop. This is broken down as follows:

£30 registration fee – entitles you to access the drop in sessions organised by the University, and pays for your registration with BCS.

7 tests @ £10 per test – you can choose to pay this in full when you register or you can pay £10 each time you wish to take a test. The £10 exam fee also includes one assessment paper.

Additional assessments can be puchased at the cost of £5 each

Step 1:
Pay fees using the online shop.

Step 2: 
Details will be forwarded to the ECDL Administrator, who will then email you a 'How to Get Started' document and links for learning resources.

Step 3:
When you are ready to take a test, ensure you have paid the test fee  book yourself on a Drop-In Session.
