Student Life
quote

As well as being your student representation, the Students' Union offers many sporting and social groups to join. From rugby and snowboarding, to political groups and international societies - you'll find them all here."

Steve Godwin
President of the Students' Union

Social

A social life less ordinary

Our students tell us that being part of a small and friendly university, like Canterbury Christ University, helps them to settle in and feel at home quickly. All our campuses have great social spaces for students to relax and socialise in, including cafes with affordable and healthy food on offer - all with Fairtrade status.

Students' Union

Our Students' Union is here to support you and help you get the most out of university life. From help settling in during Freshers' week, to the annual extravaganza of the Summer Ball, they arrange plenty of events for you to get involved in. There is a SU representative at every one of our campuses - so, no matter where you study, there'll always be lots going on.

Shopping

Students that enjoy shopping have their needs well catered for. There are large, modern shopping complexes within easy reach of three of our main campus sites. The Whitefriars Shopping Centre is only a stone's throw away from our Canterbury campus. Students in Broadstairs have the Westwood Cross shopping and leisure complex, whilst Bluewater is situated nearby our Medway campus.

Arts and culture

If culture is what you are looking for, we have something for everyone.

Canterbury is a World Heritage City and is steeped in history. It offers theatres, museums and our own Sidney Cooper Gallery.

The £25.6 million redevelopment of Canterbury's Marlowe Theatre enters its final phase in 2011. The new 1,200-seat auditorium will host major touring shows.

The Turner Contemporary Gallery will be opening in spring 2011, nearby our Broadstairs campus. It will feature superb exhibition spaces, education facilities and will be one of the largest galleries in the South East, outside London.

At our Folkestone campus, you'll be in the heart of the creative quarter, right next door to the newly-opened Quarterhouse Theatre.

Clubs and societies

Getting involved in a club is a great way to meet new friends and get into university life. Here are just some of the clubs you could join:

  • Football
  • Band Society
  • Dance Club
  • Amnesty International

City links

Canterbury is supported by two railway stations. The new high-speed service, operating out of Canterbury West, means that central London is now less than an hour away. Canterbury is also approximately 20 minutes by train (from Canterbury East station) or car to the ferry and Eurotunnel terminals, which offer frequent crossings to France. Travellers wishing to take the Eurostar should board the train from Canterbury West to Ashford International, from where the journey to Paris will take approximately two hours.

Did you know?

Canterbury plays host to a number of festivals each year, celebrating everything from music and the arts to food and drink, including:

  • Canterbury Festival - an annual International festival of arts and culture.
  • Anifest - Kent's first animation festival. With guest speakers and workshops.
  • Lounge on the Farm - an annual music festival, attracting thousands of visitors and an impressive line up of artists.
  • CAMRA beer festival - annual real ale event held in Canterbury.
