Preparing to apply
The first step towards your research degree is to choose your subject of interest and a relevant supervisor.
Please see the Postgraduate Research Prospectus| for details of programmes, staff research interests and the Programme leaders who can help you find the right person to supervise your research degree and discuss your options with.
Entry requirements
Acceptance onto our research programmes will be in accordance with the following criteria:

A suitable academic background. You will be expected to have a relevant degree of at least an Upper Second Class Honours (2:1) and two academic references.

A successful interview.

That the University can provide appropriate supervision.

That the resources available (time, equipment, fieldwork expenses, library access) are sufficient to permit completion of the research.

That this research topic is aligned with the University’s research priorities (in the case of University funded scholarships).
-
For International students, compliance with the UK Border Agency current regulations for Tier 4 visa students.
How to apply
Applications can be submitted at any time. The starting dates for research degree programmes are October 1st, January 1st and May 1st of each year. The application process may take up to six months.
Applications for 1 October 2012 registration are now closed
Candidates having followed the ‘preparing to apply’ guidance, must submit the following to the Graduate School Administrator|, who is also available for any enquiries you might have about the research application process.

A completed application form

A 1500 research proposal on the pro forma provided (adhering to the word count limit)

Two academic references which speak authoritatively about your potential as a researcher.
It is preferred that these documents are sent by email. Once received, your submitted documents will then be forwarded to the Research Lead of the relevant department for consideration.
Fees for 2012-13
Home/EU students - Full-time £3,828 per annum
Home/EU students - Part-time £2,297 per annum
International students - Full-time £10,200 per annum

Applying for MA by Research (in History)
Preparing to apply
Prospective students are welcome to contact Professor Jackie Eales| for an initial discussion. The research expertise of the staff covers medieval, early modern and twentieth century topics.
Entry requirements
Acceptance onto our MA by Research programme will be in accordance with the following criteria:

You will be expected to have at least an Upper Second Class Honours (2:1) or 1st Class standard in History.

Two recent academic references.

A successful interview.

That the University can provide appropriate supervision.

That the resources available (time, equipment, fieldwork expenses, library access) are sufficient to permit completion of the research.
