The award of Fair Trade Status is in recognition of the University’s efforts to encourage staff and students to buy Fairtrade products in order to tackle poverty.

All coffee sold to staff and students at the University’s Canterbury Campus is Fairtrade – including the coffee supplied for conferences and meetings.  The University also sells Fairtrade tea, coffee, hot chocolate and confectionary and is active in educating staff and students in the importance of buying products carrying the Fairtrade mark.

Fairtrade allow producers in developing countries to have the chance to build a better future by improving their livelihoods, strengthening their businesses and benefiting their communities.

Canterbury Christ Church University’s General Manager for Catering Services, Nick Maude, said: “The University is keen to help its students, staff and local community understand that by changing to the huge range of Fairtrade products now available they can empower others to work towards a better life.  When we began this initiative, two and a half years ago, there were only five major Fairtrade products available and our customers initially did not buy into the cause.  However, now we have got across the critical message of the moral implications of Fairtrade and our customers have a real understanding of what this issue is about.  The sale of products has mushroomed and Fairtrade has now bedded in and is a significant force within this institution.”

Notes to Editor

Fairtrade

1. The Fairtrade Foundation is an independent certification body that awards the Fairtrade Mark to products which meet international Fairtrade standards set by FLO (Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International) the umbrella organisation that unites national initiatives across Europe, Japan, North America, Mexico, and Australia / New Zealand.  This independent consumer label appears on products as a guarantee that disadvantaged producers are getting a better deal.  Today, more than five million people – farmers, workers and their families – across 58 developing countries benefit from the international Fairtrade system.

2. The full range of Fairtrade products is: coffee, tea, chocolate, cocoa, sugar, bananas, apples, pears, grapes, plums, lemons, oranges, satsumas, clementines, lychees, avocados, pineapples, mangoes, fruit juices, smoothies, quinoa, peppers, green beans, coconuts, dried fruit, rooibos tea, green tea, ice-cream, cakes, biscuits, honey, muesli, cereal bars, jams, chutney, sauces, herbs, spices, nuts, nut oil, wine, beer, rum, flowers, sports balls, rice, yoghurt, babyfood, sugar body scrub, cotton wool and cotton products.

Canterbury Christ Church University

Canterbury Christ Church University is the largest centre of higher education in Kent for public services – notably teacher training, policing and health and social care.  The University is also a significant provider of programmes in a wide range of academic areas within its Faculties of Arts and Humanities and Business and Sciences.

From a small independent College of less than five hundred students – all training to be school teachers – in the 1960s, we have grown to a fully fledged university with 14,000 students and 1,000 staff members with campuses in Canterbury, Tunbridge Wells, Broadstairs and Chatham.  Our teaching and learning facility for health, education and policing students at Chatham is part of the Universities At Medway Project in partnership with the Universities of Greenwich and Kent with Mid-Kent College.

As an outward looking University and a Church of England foundation, our mission is to provide excellent academic and professional education underpinned by research, scholarship and creative work and by Christian principles and values.
