Public lecture on regeneration for Margate

Extensive regeneration plans for Margate will be revealed at a public lecture at Canterbury Christ Church Universitys Broadstairs Campus at 6pm on Thursday 13th March.

The lecture, entitled ‘Margate is my Milan’, will be given by Derek Harding, the Programme Manager for Margate Partnership Renewal – the organisation that has been set up to help secure the regeneration of Margate and stimulate further investment in the town.  The event is open to all members of the public and admission is free.

Speaking before his lecture, Derek said: “I will discuss the ambitious plans to turn Margate back into an exciting, vibrant and successful seaside town.  During my lecture, I will explore the history of the town, some of the key drivers behind the town’s recent decline and set out a vision for the future.”

The event is part of Canterbury Christ Church University’s public lecture series which aims to strengthen links with the local community.  No reservation is required.  If you are a member of the media and would like to attend, please contact the University’s Media Relations Officer, Claire Draper.

Derek Harding

Derek Harding is the Programme Director for the Margate Renewal Programme.  The programme is overseen by the Margate Renewal Partnership.  Derek has been in post since August 2006 and his role is to co-ordinate and oversee the programme on behalf of the Partnership.  Derek is also a member of the BURA Seaside Network Executive.

Derek lives in Margate and prior to taking up his current post was a Director of Hyde Housing for over six years, with responsibility for community regeneration activities across the Hyde Group.  Prior to joining Hyde, Derek worked on a number of major regeneration initiatives including the Woolwich Capital Challenge programme, the Creekside Renewal SRB Programme in Deptford and the Greenwich Waterford Development Strategy.  He is a qualified town planner with a BA (Hons) degree in Urban Planning Studies.
