University’s History degree is UK number one

18 October 2006

Canterbury Christ Church University has the number one History degree in the UK, according to the National Student Survey.

The University’s History BA (Hons) programme shares the number one spot for history degrees with Durham University, the Open University and Portsmouth University.

According to the National Student Survey, the University’s history programme scored 4.6 out of 5 for ‘overall student satisfaction’ and 4.5 out of 5 for the quality of its teaching.  The programme was reviewed by students as part of a national survey of 170,000 final year undergraduate students studying at publicly-funded higher education institutions across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Canterbury Christ Church University’s Principal Lecturer of History, Dr Stephen Hipkin, said: “This result is based on team work and a real concern for each individual student’s university experience.  The University’s History BA (Hons) degree is one of the very few in the country to have such a broad-based curriculum which encompasses medieval, early modern and modern British and European history. From next year, students will have the added opportunity to study archaeology within the history programme.”

History at Canterbury Christ Church University

The most recent Institutional Audit report expressed “confidence in the academic standards being achieved. Staff are well qualified and research active; there is good practice in the structuring of the curriculum and its relevance to the learning needs of students.  There is also a general concern for the support of students from a broad range of study backgrounds, leading to sound progression and achievement outcomes.”

The teaching of History at the University was graded as ‘excellent’ in the last round of the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s teaching quality assessments, making it the only History Department in Southern England, beyond London, Oxford and Cambridge, to boast this distinction.

The Department was also awarded a 3a rating in the most Research Assessment Exercise, denoting research of both national and international excellence.  The themes of many courses, therefore, reflect the research expertise and enthusiasm of the lecturers.
