Christ Church hosts Puerto Rico competitors for London 2012

03 April 2012

Canterbury Christ Church University will host up to 40 competitors from the Puerto Rico Olympic team during this summer's Olympic Games.

Competitors from sports, including basketball, weightlifting, gymnastics, judo, boxing, athletics and freestyle wrestling will train at the University’s first class sporting facilities in the run up to London 2012.

Andrew Balsdon, Director of Sport at Canterbury Christ Church University, said: "We’re delighted to be hosting the Puerto Rico Olympic Squad and helping with their preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games. The opportunity to support their sportsmen and women and develop cultural and sport related links is a very exciting prospect".

The announcement comes after an agreement was signed between the country's National Olympic Committee and Kent County Council for the athletes to train in Kent ahead of London 2012.

KCC Cabinet member for Customer and Communities Mike Hill said: "We are delighted Puerto Rico has chosen to come to Kent and we look forward to welcoming all the international athletes who will be staying and training here. The work which has taken place over the years will help the county benefit from a boost in tourism, an increase in spending locally as well a real excitement of being on the doorstep of London 2012."

Kent County Council has worked hard to encourage and welcome top level international sportspeople to the county, as part of the Kent 2012 campaign to maximise the benefits to the county from the games. The aim is that elite athletes will use local facilities and create a link with communities and residents.

The Puerto Rico team will also train at Canterbury High School and Canterbury Boxing Club and adds to a long line of nations who have already chosen Kent as their Olympics base.  Kent has also been recognised as being among the counties with the most nations, excluding London, to sign up Olympic squads.
