Jubilee celebrations continue with special Cathedral concert

01 March 2012

Golden Jubilee celebrations continue for Canterbury Christ Church University this month with a very special concert at Canterbury Cathedral.

The University is a passionate supporter of the region’s art and culture and has put music at the heart of their year long celebrations.

The concert, on Saturday 17 March will see present and former music students join-up with professional musicians associated with the University’s Music Department. The four professional soloists are all former students of the Music Department.

The Canterbury Christ Church Choral Society and the 2012 Orchestra will be directed by Professor Grenville Hancox and will perform Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D minor and The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins.

The performance will also be Professor Hancox's final concert as Director of Music prior to his retirement. Professor Hancox has had 30 years association with the University’s Music Department leading it to great achievements and inspiring a generation of students and local communities to see the many different benefits of music.

Other musical highlights to celebrate 50 years of education and innovation include the opening of the newly refurbished St Gregory's Centre for Music, in October. This newly renovated iconic and historic venue for music performance will offer world class facilities to be enjoyed by national and international audiences, as well as the local community. It will also enable the University to extend its future public music programme, including a new strand of professional concerts.

October will also see the opening the Sir Peter Maxwell Davies Building on the Canterbury Campus, offering a new suite of state of the art practice rooms, along with seminar and rehearsal spaces for students and staff. This will be complemented by the enhancement of lighting and acoustics in Augustine Hall, offering alternative city centre performance space.
